The 20 Degrees Vision
What is the 20 Degrees vision?
20 Degrees is a collaborative vision led by Sustainability Options. It is a movement to improve living conditions for whānau across the Bay of Plenty.
Through home assessments, minor repairs, education, and local partnerships, our aim is simple: to help create warmer, drier, healthier homes that support the wellbeing of the people who live in them.
This mahi is about more than fixing cold or damp whare. It’s about walking alongside whānau, sharing knowledge, building whānau capacity, and working together to make change that lasts.
Why 20 Degrees?
The World Health Organisation recommends that homes with young children, older adults, or vulnerable people should be kept at around 20°C for good health.
For us, 20 Degrees isn’t just a number. It’s a vision. It represents the warmth, safety, and comfort every whānau deserves to feel in their own home, especially on a cold winter’s night.
Behind every statistic on poor housing in Aotearoa are stories like that of a child struggling to breathe, a whānau battling a leaky roof, or a whānau struggling to afford heating. In the presentation below, our colleague Melanie explores the human cost of inadequate housing, and the simple truth that housing is healthcare.
What resources are available through 20 Degrees?
Whether a whānau owns their home, rents, or lives somewhere in between, we’re here to help whānau take steps toward that healthy 20°C.
Our team provides free home assessments. Our home assessments work with the whānau/family to create a tailored plan to address issues preventing the home from reaching 20°C. This can include advice, advocacy, education, referrals, product installation, and/or repairs and maintenance support.
We also deliver free community workshops across the Bay of Plenty, offering practical advice and support to get homes to be warmer, drier, and healthier.
